can ebooks from websites only be read by ereaders on the same site?

not sure if that really makes sense.. i want to get an ereader but was wondering – can you use ebooks from sites like barnes and noble if you were to get an amazon kindle? same with ereaders from borders.com, can you use these ebooks with different brands of ereaders?? i really like either the nook or the cruz reader at borders.com but borders doesn’t have many textbooks(i was planning to use this for school too)

Yes and no. Kindle and nookcolor will not read each others formats, however, the nookcolor will read ePub books that are the standard for books bought at Borders. Kindle will not read ePub files.
