The Story of Edgar Sawtelle Will Have You Thinking

Having your novel chosen to be in the Oprah Book Club is a huge honor. Though there have been past flops, most novels chosen for the club are very well written and planned out. David Wroblewski is one of the newest members with his The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. The story is a twist on the classic Hamlet by Shakespeare. Wroblewski had some huge shoes to step into when he decided to tackle this story and the themes found in Hamlet. He could have fell completely flat and been left with a novel that fell far too short of its lofty goals. Does the author succeed or does he fail to produce a novel worth downloading?

The elements of a classic story are pretty simple. You must have a protagonist that readers can identify with, at least on some level. There must be conflict or trouble that must be overcome within the story. And there has to be an antagonist who has the reader seething in anger and displeasure. Wroblewski choose to tackle this by setting his story on a farm that raises dogs. It features all of the essentials that made Hamlet such a classic, which will remain in literary glory for eternity. But many readers felt that Wroblewski fell a bit short.

If you are expecting a happy ending to The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, then obviously you have never read Hamlet. Some readers have commented that the story was good but it fell short. They did not like the ending. It is very obvious that those reviewers were not familiar with the tragic Hamlet and his bittersweet revenge. Wroblewski’s story is in the same vein.

David Wroblewski did score a hit by enticing Oprah to include it in her book club suggestions, yet it does seem to have fallen short for some readers. The ratings for the book are all over the board. One reader loved it. One reader rated it with four stars on www.amazon.com and still others gave it lesser stars. Before you decide whether to buy this book for your Kindle you do have the option of downloading a sample of the book. That is really great because you can get a feel for Wroblewski’s writing style.

You may find yourself eagerly identifying with the problems that face Edgar Sawtelle. And if you are a fan of Shakespeare’s work then The Story of Edgar Sawtelle may definitely be worth the cost of downloading it to your Kindle. You save on bookshelf space and if you do not like it, you can easily delete it. But you may find yourself drawn into Edgar’s struggles and find yourself rooting for a happy ending.
