How the Kindle ebook Reader Device Converted Even Hardcore Bibliophiles

Amazon’s Kindle ebook Reader Device had a huge hurtle to overcome in order to become more than just

a gimmicky gadget that would be forgotten in a couple months after its glitzy launch.

There’s something about going to the store, purchasing a hardcopy book, and rifling through the pages

that e-books have never been able to compete with. Most of the backlash stems from the fact that the platforms on which those

books have been displayed historically haven’t been up to the task. The screens are too small, too bright,

look too much like computers, and make you feel as if you’re still jacked into the high-tech matrix that traps us all every day of our working life.

Essentially, people buy books to get away from computers.

What’s more, “book people” love books.

How could the Kindle overcome that?

True “bookies” have a voracious appetite for the written word. The Kindle provides instant gratification for those types of folks.

You can use the Kindle ebook Reader Device feature (access to Sprint’s 3G network in the US and AT&T’s 3G network internationally) to browse the Kindle library and download new titles to your reader in 60 seconds. Not only that but those digital books you’re buying are a lot cheaper than the paper

versions you’d buy at the store. Almost all of the Kindle titles are discounted from their retail price,

some very much so.

But “bookies” are just about nibbling at their books, they devour them, reading them over and over again,

writing in the margins, highlighting, dog-earing pages for later reference and generally turning their book

into a true interactive experience. Guess what, the Kindle allows them to do all that. It has a built-in highlighter, can bookmark your place instantly, features an annotation feature so you can “mark up

the margins” with notes, and even has a built-in dictionary (the New Oxford English dictionary with over

250,000 entries), something that forces “real” book readers to pause, go to the book shelf, and hunt through the pages.

The Kindle ebook Reader Device is ideally suited for long reading sessions too. The battery last for up to two weeks without

a charge because the device only draws power when the image on the E Ink screen is refreshed.

That screen displays images and text in black and white in up to 16 shades of grey. Best of all, it’s not backlit or reflective. That means less eye strain and no glare from bright lights. That feature alone makes

the Kindle perfect for outdoor reading (no cursing the wind as it blows your pages and loses your place either!)

The new Kindle 2 (Amazon ebook)has also been significantly redesigned to make it more user-friendly.

Not only are the controls more responsive and physically positioned on the device in a more sensible manner,

they’re extremely easy to learn—you don’t have to be a computer geek or into “mobile technology.” Amazon made it easy for “old skool” book readers to transition to digital print.

The Kindle is also portable. You can take it with you wherever you go and never even know it’s there until

you want it. The device is just .36 inches thick and weighs only 10.2 ounces (most of that’s battery weight.)

Also, it’s perfectly suited for trips across country or even outside the US as the connectivity is uses cellular technology not an internet connection or Wi -Fi.

Amazon ebook had a hard job trying to convince fans of traditional print media to make the switch to digital and

embrace the Kindle
ebook Reader Device
but many a “bookie” has followed in the footsteps of acclaimed author

Neil Gaiman and become an “absolute believer.”
