Why doesn’t the Kindle have a Color Screen?
It boggles me that in 2011, the Amazon Kindle has NO color screen. Yet you shell out hundreds of dollars for it to have 3G internet access, extra roaming capabilities, GPS, etc. But it’s in black-and-white??? What gives? Are the owners just waiting to squeeze out more dollars from the Americans and then say “Guess what, it’s 2012 and NOW we’re releasing a color version of the Kindle.” That’s like saying iMac is unveiling their new computers with color monitors. Color has been around for decades now, this should not be that hard.
Compare the kindle with the Nook color.
Both e-readers targeted at very similar markets.
The Nook color has a color screen but it’s thicker, heavier, twice the price, harder on the eyes, can’t be read in direct sunlight and the battery life is about 5% of the kindles.
It’s simple a question of trade offs based on the limitations of current technology. Amazon decided that the benefits of a color screen simply weren’t worth the disadvantages.
The Nook is a far better general purpose device, you can easily hack it and get a full android tablet for a very good price. It can do things that the kindle could never do.
The kindle on the other hand is a very specialized device, all it’s good for is reading books. But it does that job very very well. The cost of that specialization is a lack of color screen.
Color e-ink screens are probably at least 2-3 years away but it’s hard to be sure. Unless Amazon change their design philosophy don’t expect a color kindle until around 2015 at the earliest.
