The Twenty First Century Summer Camps
Modern day summer camps are quite different than their predecessors. A summer camp typically conjures up images of lakes, trees, and camping. The images that many horror movies use as backdrops. However, the summer camp experience has changed considerably.
Camps in recent years are larger in size and scope of activities and amenities. Furthermore, summer camps don’t necessarily have to be about outdoor activities. Many universities now offer summer programs for younger kids. Also, some camps are now dedicated to single activities, such as basketball, football, swimming, golf, and tennis. There are others more cerebral in nature and target language or team building skills. Some are more artistically focused, and offer painting guidance or lessons in different instruments, such as the Ibanez electric guitar.
The amenities at summer camps also varies. Some of the sports and teaching oriented summer camps are usually day camps not over night. However, there are some that provide all inclusive services. Many parents who send their kids away to summer camp need to ensure that proper services are available. In this modern age of technology, however, going away to summer camp doesn’t have the same abandonment. The children are within a text message or cell phone call away.
The chore of packing for an away summer camp has also become much simpler. Nowadays, kids don’t have to pack a separate bag for books and such. All they need is a laptop or gadgets, such as the kindle reader. This allows the child with access to all the books he or she will need for the month. Hence, traveling also becomes much less burdensome. One issue that can arise is the scarcity of electric outlets, but this can help develop negotiation skills.
The more expensive camps offer greater amenities in terms of full time medical staffs and even spas. Medical concerns are perhaps the single most important issue for parents. Having a medical staff or facility alleviates much of this burden, particularly if the child suffers from ailments such as diabetes that require daily monitoring. Other services, often times much less life threatening, can involve everything from an acne peel to weight prevention procedures.
The most popular summer camps tend to be focused on some type of sporting activity. Single sport camps can become boring after a while. However, many kids do want to improve in one area or another and it all comes down to one’s interest. For the average camp attendee, all he or she wants to do is have some fun and variety is the spice of life.
In short, summer camps have dramatically changed over the years. Not only have the programs being offered increased, but the locations and amenities have also expanded. There are also specialty camps that target almost any whim or interest any child may have. The advent of technology has only helped to enhance the overall experience while also providing added benefits and security.
