The Battle Of EReader Giants – Kindle Versus Nook

When researching on the greatest eReaders available today, two always seem to poo up. Kindle versus Nook, or the relatively young internet giant Amazon versus the old-fashioned Barnes & Noble has become a huge battle, but which one is the better eReader?

Kindle v Nook is quite the battle. The two of them both have a 6 inch eInk screen with a clear 600×800 resolution, both of them offer lots of content and allows you to read books, magazines and blogs. They both offer 3G and WiFi and cost around the $150 mark, but that is where their sameness end.

When we are comparing two similar products like this we need to consider what sets them apart, not what they both do well, because this is what will help us select on what eReader is the one we want.

Firstly, the weight difference between the two models is somewhat momentous. Kindle 3 is only 8.7 ounces, whereas the Nook is 12.1 ounces. That is a 30% difference and may not seem like that much, but you will certainly feel it after holding onto it for a while. The lighter Kindle is also far more easy to take with you and better designed for reading. Secondly, the speed and ease of operation varies quite a bit between the Kindle and the Nook. The Kindle is much faster and certainly more user friendly, both with page turns and also navigation between the different menus. The capacity of the battery on the two models is similar, but you will get an extra week out of the Kindle (4 weeks), compared to the Nook with just 3 weeks. In addition, the Kindle comes with twice as much internal memory (4GB) as the Nook (2GB), however if you feel so inclined, with the Nook you are able to expand to 16 GB via a SD card slot.

The Nook will support the open-source format ePub, whereas the Kindle 3 does not. What this means is that if you decide to buy an Amazon Kindle you are pretty much locked in to purchasing your eBooks through Amazon. The ePub format lets you share books with others and also borrow books from digital libraries.

If your decision ends up on the Amazon Kindle you will be able to enjoy their Read-To-Me feature which will allow you to convert your eBook to an audio-book. With the push of a button a voice will start reading the book out loud to you and you can just close your eyes and listen. This great feature is invaluable for those individuals who are prone to headaches after reading or have any sort of vision impairment. I prefer reading for a while, but when my eyes get tired I turn on the Read-To-Me feature and listen instead. Unfortunately, the Barnes & Noble Nook has no such feature.

So, this brings us to the verdict. They are both great eReaders, but in the battle of giants we need a winner. When viewing the stats, the main feature the Nook has that the Kindle does not, is support of the ePub format. The Kindle does everything else better. I guess it will have to be your decision if this feature alone is sufficient to select buying it instead of the Kindle. It should be mentioned that you can use a legal and free program called Calibre that can convert between Kindle formats and ePub. This however will not work with copy-write protected books.

My choice would have to be the Kindle. It offers all of the important features I believe an eReader should have and it does pretty much everything faster and better than its competition. If you want to know more about eReaders, check our website.
