Are Portable E-Readers A Good Investment?

Book lovers living in small houses, rejoice! The E-readers are here, and now we are seeing enough unique models available to allow for some degree of competition and invention. Obviously, no product is ever an ideal fit for everyone, so listed below are some basic examinations of each entry. Another must see is the Fujitsu S1500 Scansnap Scanner.

Amazon’s Kindle comes with a considerable selection of books and other publications which are obtainable through their wireless data network. This reader can store about 1,500 e-books, which is fortunate, as it provides no expansion slot for increased memory. The Kindle is able to play MP3 and AAC audio and can talk to Windows and Mac systems.  A nice addition to check out is the Fujitsu S1500 Scansnap Scanner.

The battery is sealed into the device and is not replaceable, yet the battery life is thought to be “good”, which may or may not be reassuring to you. Regrettably, it’s not compatible with free e-books from your public library which use the ePub format.  Additionally, even though the wireless service can function abroad, you are going to be billed extra fees for downloading books there. Barnes & Noble’s Nook provides you with about as many books and periodicals as the Kindle, and it is ePub compatible and could allow you to lend particular e-books for up to two weeks. The Nook cannot permit you to download books in foreign countries, by the way. The Nook is comparable to the Kindle with regards to system compatibility and enjoys the added convenience of an expansion slot for additional memory, in addition to a removable battery. The Nook does not allow word or text files, though, and the technology is still a bit buggy.

The Sony Reader is the patriarch of e-readers, and subsequently carries the edge of having figured out nearly all of its glitches. The Reader has also undergone several updates, consequently it has been able to react to marketplace forces in addition to advancements in technology. Sony’s Reader can store thousands of electronic books, and a lot more may be accomodated with the inclusion of  a suggested memory card. There isn’t a book or periodical format which the Reader doesn’t support, such as ePub and PDF files. Interestingly enough, one improvement the Reader has yet to offer is wireless capacity, so all things must be dragged and dropped from a PC.

The iPad is yet new enough to be a comparative unknown, in spite of its highly publicized and fashionably late entrance to this particular soiree. According to most reviews, it performs really well as a reader, accomodating all of the formats which can be used with the rival e-readers, and features several gaming applications too. Interestingly, Apple is choosing to market this gadget as a business tool, regardless that it is outperformed in this application by the majority of netbooks and Apple’s own iPhone.
