Why should you care about a cool ebook reader? Sales of ebook readers and ebooks are exploding. According to Amazon, Kindle books are outselling paperbacks. In addition, as ebook readers are becoming more popular prices are coming down. What is a cool ebook reader? There are 5 features you should be comparing.

1. Screen. Obviously the most critical feature. You want good readability, no eye strain and as close to reading on real paper as possible. It is also important to be able to read the screen in the sunlight. Think how often you read outside. A less reflective screen is good. It is better to have more of a matte finish as reflections can be bothersome.

2. Speed and Navigation. What good is an ebook reader if you have to wait for the page to turn. The ebook reader experience should not be frustrating. A cool ebook reader turns on fast, has quick page turns and has swift ebook download times.

Some ebook readers have touch screen navigation while others use fixed keyboard navigation. In either case you want responsiveness. You do not need to feel like you have to tap on the screen or key several times before you see a response.

3. Wi-Fi capability This is also a very important feature and it is beneficial to understand the difference between Wi-Fi capable and 3G capable. With Wi-Fi you will need a hotspot or your own Wi-Fi network to connect and download books and media. 3G allows you to piggy back off of the cell phone network for connectivity, which means you can connect anywhere your cell phone works. This will also allow you to use your cool ebook reader wirelessly across many countries and territories throughout the world.

4. Battery Life. Don’t underestimate battery life. Again, the ebook reader experience should not be frustrating and the last thing you want is needing a battery recharge when you are ready for a good read. Battery life will vary amongst the ebook readers from a few weeks to about 1 month. The longer the better.

5. Miscellaneous Features. There are a couple of nice to haves that will make your experience that much more enjoyable. A cool ebook reader will provide capability to put PDF’s and other types of media files on the device, including music which you can listen to while reading.

Also, you should be able to share ebooks on your reader with other owners of the same type of device or people who have the same ebook reader application on their PC or laptop, for example. The common length of time for ebook sharing is up to 2 weeks.

Currently, the most famous brands in the ebook reader market include Amazon’s Kindle and Barnes and Noble’s Nook. Amazon has released Kindle 3, the latest release of Nook is Nook 2 and Barnes and Noble has recently updated it’s software as well. Both readers have added features and should be considered when looking for a cool ebook reader.
