Ereaders may have been slow to catch on but they’re making up for lost time now.  They’ve made up for lost time since then, and were a popular gift item in the 2010 holiday shopping season.  Numerous companies have released their own versions of the ebook reader since 2007 in an effort to compete in this growing market.

It’s getting harder to choose the best ereader, since there are so many on the market.  Like most other digital devices, you don’t necessarily have to pay top dollar to get one that does what you want.  All ereaders do a good job serving their basic function: storing books and allowing you to retrieve and read them in a convenient manner with just a finger sweep or button touch.

* Portability: Does it travel easily?  Can you hold it in your hand comfortably without spraining your wrist?  Does it fit nicely in the palm of your hand?

* Speed of page turning: The difference between devices might be mere seconds, but having to wait too long when you’re in the middle of the best part of the story can be frustrating.

* Responsiveness: Does power up and wake up quickly?  Is it slow to retrieve files?  Does it take forever to download a book?

* Readability: Is there backlighting in case you want to read in the dark?  (Not every device has backlighting.) Is the font/print size adjustable?  Is the screen big enough?

* Battery life: Do you get enough read time between battery charges?  Will it last for a six hour visit to the beach?
