Kindle Speech Pdf

Do you have to purchase KINDLE book versions for it to work?

I am getting a Kindle, but I have most books in PDF form and Microsoft but I want to know if I will be able to read them or if they will say I can only read Kindle books.
For instance can I download my english speech onto it? It is in microsoft word mode.
Will I be able to open it and read it in class??
Can you connect and surf the internet?? Because it said “Share you status with facebook.” and why would it have a keyboard???
