Kindle Hardware Problems
What is the best long-term format in which to start buying e-books?
I’m going to be doing a lot of travel in my lifetime, and I love reading. I want to start getting new books in electronic format so they can easily travel with me. But to my eye, the ebook market looks like the VHS/Betamax or HD-DVD/Blu-Ray problem a million times over.
I want to know what ebook formats are the best quality, and most likely to last long-term. I don’t want to buy my books in a crappy format, or in a format that will disappear after I invest hundreds of dollars over the years into it.
I don’t care so much about the hardware, by the way… I’ll read them on my computer for now, and long-term e-reader hardware will get better for everyone. If a Kindle is better than a Nook today (or vice-versa), it doesn’t affect my decision.

I wouldn’t put money into any of the current vendor specific formats out there, if you want to make a long term investment in e-books and readers. I would wate until they standardize on a DRM or open based format any store can sell to work on any reader, and which has static DRM, or no DRM at all.
If you want to make a long term investment in reading material, get the dead tree editions. They won’t become obsolete, and will work if the various companies go out of business.
